Fish tissue contamination monitoring consists of a Local Bioaccumulation Trends Survey and a Local Seafood Safety Survey. The results of these monitoring efforts can be found in the Bioaccumulation chapter of the Warren Facility Biennial Receiving Water Monitoring Report.

Local Bioaccumulation Trends Survey

This annual survey determines the levels of fish tissue contamination near the outfall and whether it is changing over time. Ten white croaker and hornyhead turbot are collected annually from three zones along the Palos Verdes shelf. Composites of muscle (both species) and liver (Hornyhead Turbot) tissue samples are analyzed for DDTs, PCBs, percent lipid, and percent moisture.

Local Seafood Safety Survey

The biennial survey determines if existing seafood consumption advisories are still necessary and identifies trends in tissue contaminants in other species not subject to current consumption advisories. Ten kelp bass, barred sand bass, benthic rockfish (e.g., California Scorpionfish, Vermillion Rockfish), black perch, and white croaker are collected from three zones along the Palos Verdes shelf. Composites of muscle tissue samples are analyzed for DDT, PCBs, arsenic, mercury, percent lipid, and percent moisture.
