Home MenuWastewater Service Overview
The Sanitation Districts are 24 independent special districts that have joined together to provide wastewater treatment and disposal service for residential, commercial, and industrial users in Los Angeles County. Our service area covers approximately 800 square miles and encompasses 78 cities and unincorporated territory within Los Angeles County.
The Sanitation Districts’ wastewater system consists of approximately 1,400 miles of sewers, 48 pumping plants, and 11 wastewater treatment plants.
The Sanitation Districts operate and maintain wastewater treatment facilities and the larger, regional collection systems. Cities and unincorporated areas within each District are responsible for local sewers and laterals that connect to the Districts’ trunk sewers.
This wastewater systems serve three major regions:
- Joint Outfall System
- Outlying Districts (the Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita Valley), and
- Districts that contract with the City of Los Angeles
