Sewer Science:

How Sewage and Drinking Water are Cleaned.

Sewer ScienceThe Sanitation Districts' in-person Sewer Science classes are back. Please call 562-908-4288, extension 2300, for more information.

Sewer Science is a week-long laboratory for high school science students that shows how sewage and drinking water are cleaned. In this award-winning program, students create simulated wastewater; clean it through a series of physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes; and test it for various water quality parameters.

The Sewer Science program receives rave reviews from both students and teachers as it provides a hands-on application of science. The program not only teaches how water is treated but also links science and technology to environmental impacts and issues. Sewer Science is interdisciplinary and encompassing.

The Sanitation Districts and our partner, the Youth Science Center (YSC), bring the Sewer Science program to approximately 5,000 students in 50 schools in our service area each year. We provide everything needed to run the program, including specially designed tanks, analytical equipment, workbooks for each student, and an in-class instructor.

Each fall, the Sanitation Districts and YSC also hold a workshop where teachers can find out more about the Sewer Science program and sign up to have the program visit their classroom.
