4/20/23 5:00 p.m.

Although our staff worked to set up containment to prevent sewage from reaching receiving waters, we estimate that 250,000 gallons of sewage reached the Los Angeles River before our crews could fully contain the sewage that spilled into a local storm drain.  Local public health officials have been notified and are expected to close local beaches as a safety precaution.

Our crews will be sampling water in the river and ocean for signs of bacteria to help officials determine when it is safe to reopen beaches.

Cleanup activities continue.

4/20/23 12:55 p.m.

This morning, equipment used by a Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts maintenance crew malfunctioned causing a temporary blockage in the sewer. Starting at 9:40 a.m., this blockage caused sewage to overflow into the street at Burns Avenue and Rives Avenue in Downey.

Our crews cleared the blockage at 11:20 a.m. and the overflow immediately stopped.  They are now focused on cleaning the impacted streets and will work continuously until the area has been cleaned.  We recommend that the public avoid Rives Avenue between Burns Avenue and Stewart and Gray Road for the remainder of today.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at info@lacsd.org or 562-908-4288, extension 2301.
