Yesterday, the Board of Directors for the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District of Los Angeles County approved a resolution to discontinue environmental studies related to using more recycled water and discharging less water to the Santa Clara River. The agency has determined that pursuit of these studies will not yield a timely or cost-effective project for its ratepayers due to ongoing litigation, permitting uncertainty, and overlap with other regional watershed planning efforts.

On January, 31, 2019, the Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) Sanitation District, one of our 24 districts, awarded a construction contract for an advanced water treatment facility at the Valencia Water Reclamation Plant. The new facilities will enable the SCV Sanitation District to comply with a strict State and Federally-mandated limit on the amount of chloride (salt) in the treated water discharged to the Santa Clara River by the SCV's two wastewater (sewage) treatment plants.

The Sanitation Districts awarded a construction contract for the Clearwater Project to Dragados USA, Inc. The project will protect local waterways by addressing aging infrastructure and involves building a new 7-mile long, 18-foot diameter tunnel to convey treated water from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to existing ocean outfalls at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro. Construction will begin this year and is scheduled to end in 2026.

The 17-acre Bixby Marshland, located near the intersection of Figueroa and Sepulveda in the City of Carson, was restored by the Sanitation Districts in 2009. This marshland is a unique habitat located in an urban setting. We are open for free tours on the first Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. We also schedule tours for groups by appointment.
